Commemorate, educate and liberate with Dayton Pride

by Scotty Didier

Dayton-The Dayton Gay Pride 2006 celebration is upon us. Join the LGBT community along with their friends and families in celebrating the lives we lead.

This year we Commemorate, Educate and Liberate!

We commemorate the men and women who stood for freedom before us, the education needed to change hearts and minds, and the liberation required for all to enjoy a free and just society.

The Pride Parade and Festival is on June 3, and the party continues on June 17 with Dayton's annual Pride Dinner and Exposition.

The evening's entertainment is headlined by Dayton's own Rubi Girls, with performances by MC Rob Austin, the Dayton Gay Men's Chorus, Andrew Hyde and Scott Stoney, and Kevin Moore of the Human Race Theatre Co.

Speakers at the event will be Joe Lacey of the Dayton Board of Education, the first openly gay board of education member in the state of Ohio, and Lynne Bowman, executive director of Equality Ohio.

Tickets for the dinner are available at Q Gifts, Books & Company and 464 on Fifth. It will be at the David H. Ponitz Sinclair Center,

at Perry and West Fourth Streets on the Sinclair Community College campus.

Dayton is abuzz with other Pride activities courtesy of supportive organizations and businesses. The list includes a concert series sponsored by Club Masque and featuring Amber, Margaret Cho and Tiffany.

Some of the other events this month for Pride include:

Eternal Joy Metropolitan Community Church and St. Paul United Methodist Church will participate in a joint worship service to be held at the St. Paul church on June 11 at 10:30.

Dayton Gay Men's Chorus Annual Pride Concert, June 10 at 8 p.m., Smith Auditorium, Ponitz Center, Sinclair Community College.

Diversity Dayton Picnic, Sunday June 11, from 1 pm to 5 pm at Ernst Park in Kettering.

A University of Dayton GLBT alumni association is now forming. Their first event is a June 10 wine and cheese social, from 57 pm in the KU Pub.
